The Person Behind the Camera

About

The photographer crouched at dog level in a shelter corridor, camera in hand, a dog leaning into their shoulder

I'm a photographer and filmmaker who volunteers in NYC-area animal shelters. This site is what I make there.

Here is the problem I'm trying to solve: shelters are full of good animals photographed badly. A frightened dog under fluorescent light, shot through kennel bars on a phone between fifteen other tasks — that photo is most animals' only audition for a home. It isn't a fair one.

So I bring the same cameras, the same patience, and the same standards I'd bring to any editorial assignment, and I point them at animals who are waiting. I sit on the floor until they relax. I come back on Saturdays until the picture is true. Then I write down who they actually are, and I put it all here.

The promise is simple: professional photos and film, at no cost to shelters. Ever. The shelters do the real work — intake, medicine, care, adoption. I just make sure the world can see who's in the building.

This is an independent volunteer project. It isn't a shelter, a rescue, or a nonprofit. Every animal here lives at a real shelter, and every adoption happens with that shelter, in person.
